The move from student dietitian to confident practitioner can be challenging and new graduates need support and guidance to further develop their skills and aid this transition. This preceptorship guidance document has been produced to support this process.
Many organisations will already have a process for preceptorship in place, the contents of which relates to the specific needs of the organisation. This document is not intended to replace such documents, but to support them.
Preceptorship should enable the dietitian to confidently apply the knowledge and skills acquired as a student, to their practice, and will also provide the basis for life-long learning. Preceptorship should be built upon the premise that newly qualified dietitians are autonomous practitioners and should not undermine this. As such this document provides a framework that supports learning, rather than a mechanism for further assessment of knowledge and competences.
